Are you ready for an underground adventure unlike anything you’ve experienced before? Then you need to check out the Lava River Caves in Bend, where you and the whole family can explore a spectacular one-mile tunnel that cuts through ancient rocks. Strap on helmets with lamps and head down into this totally unique environment to see the history of these caves up close. After descending down 150 steps, you can hike down the path across a rock floor that used to be made out of molten lava. Dating back thousands and thousands of years, these lava tubes are incredibly fun to explore and lets you see Oregon geology up close. Discovered in 1889, today the cave is managed by the United State Forest Service. The path is wide and the helmets will provide plenty of light, so the experience is suitable for beginner hikers as well as children. Make sure to dress in layers, because the caves can drop to temperatures around 42 degrees. Sturdy shoes are also important, so you can make your way through the different levels of the caves and across the rocky floor that can be a bit uneven sometimes. Located only a few miles from our hotel in Downtown Bend, the Lava Tube Cave Tours are a great escape when you want to see nature of Central Oregon from a whole new angle. Skeleton Cave is open during the summer, and Boyd Cave is open year-round, so tours available are everyday. Call the expert guides at Wanderlust Tours 541-389-8359 for more information.
